nice stay”
we stayed in Paramount for Apr 23 and 24. The room is clean and spacious and we loved it. Staffs speak good English and are really nice. Takes around 10 min. drive to go to the Ferry, 5 min. drive to go to Gurny's Drive (place with brilliant food), and 40 min. drive to the airport. Walking to the restaurants is actually ok - it takes about 20 min. and it seems quite safe in the area even in midnights (we're two girls..). Staff here gave us really good tips about where to eat and we really, really enjoyed the food around. The "seagreen" restaurant right in front of the hotel was recommended by a some local people we met, but we didn't have a chance to try it.

Staying at the old family mansion”
It was like going back to your hometown for the holidays and staying in the spare room of your old family mansion. Follow the hidden trail beyond the tall buildings and busy expressway and you'll find a gem in the form of Paramount hotel. A quiet, slightly run down mansion with a scenic view of a fisherman's beach. For those who grew up in the city, it's gonna be an interesting contrasting experience. For those who go back to their hometowns during festive seasons, it's like ... well... going home. Clean rooms, comfy beds with thin blankets, a simple bathroom, an old table with a missing drawer, a lamp that works occasionally, and that favorite worn out arm chair that you simply love... It feels like home... Simplistic yet comfortable and enchanting. The service is superb, the staff are wonderfully friendly and helpful. The hotel owns the seafood restaurant at the back too... Brilliant food but It can get a little noisy at night. The location is not exactly the best but in Penang you walk, see and eat ... so no issue there. If only we're allowed to swim at the beach...

Nicely preserved heritage hotel”
i'm amaze at how good this hotel have had been preserved.the area was quiet and away from the hustle and bustle but near enough to walk to the famous gurney drive area(if you like to explore penang, that's the best way to travel)the room was ok for the price, the only thing that i have to complain is the toilet.1st the toilet flush, after flushing you have to wait atleast 15min for the next flush.2nd the shower, the water pressure is too low..!!it's gonna take forever to have a nice shower.i suggest the hotel install a water pump to increase the water pressure..!!the staff was friendly.

My stay at Paramount Hotel, Penang”
When we first registered our hotel reservation on Agoda, we felt a bit worried for fear the place was dirty or even seedy. However, we went ahead anyway because we wanted to be a bit adventurous, and the pictures of the hotel was reassuring also. All in all, we just wanted a place with a roof over our heads and the following: - air-conditioning - water heater - attached bathroom - clean environment Paramount Hotel had all of the above. And to top it all off, it sits in the middle of the Penang island so it was very convenient for us to drive around to hunt for food and drinks. I would classify the hotel as a premium backpacker's lodge.

Cosy and homey ”
Basic needs fulfilled - aircond, clean bed, water heater, clean room and clean bathroom. Friendly service. Drinking water provided. What more can I ask? I'm a regular at paramount. Stayed here more than 3 times now. And the price rates are very reasonable. As long as they maintain the quality of their hotel & services and the reasonable price rates, I'll keep paramount as the place to stay everytime I come to Penang.

a beautiful hotel and the rooms are very large and”
this colonial-style hotel and very beautiful, the rooms are spacious and very comfortable bed. bathroom looks a bit old but harmonious with the interior of the building. the dining room and living room is very homey and the service excellent. the location is far enough away from downtown about 20 minutes into the komtar and gurney drive.

Better than expected, even got free upgrade”
Perfect stay, exactly what we wanted from an old colonial home that has been transformed into a hotel. The hotel is full of character and charm and the staff are friendly and helpful. You are only 15 min walk to Penang road, just far enough out to have peace and quiet. We were given a free upgrade as the staff though we would be more comfortable with our 3 children. No tv's in the room which was great as we wanted the kids to get a cultural experience. Free breakfast consists of toast and a cuppa, perfect start before heading out to try all the local cuisines. House keeping was excellent and bent over backward for our needs. Rooms are up a small flight of stairs, common lounge area and comfortable dining. Beautiful timber floors and historically decorated. Instant hot water, very clean and well presented. I would highly recommend any stay. For the price, you will get a great stay

Peaceful ambience,friendly staff,old furniture”
Overall good stay. Very clean room and corridor. Very friendly and helpful staff. I like the fact that it is near the sea although the beach is rather deserted. However, it can get noisy in the evening at weekend or during festive seasons because there is a Chinese restaurant in front of the hotel. The location offers a peaceful ambience as the hotel is tucked inside a small lane and does not face the main road. The restaurant in front of the hotel is rather pricey so there's no convenient way to find an inexpensive eating place around. The nearest affordable eateries are located in Gurney Drive which is about 1 km away. There's no Seven Eleven close by.

Affordable Colonial Charm and Character.”
bygone era living with updated conveniences. rooms have remote controlled ac, old style ceiling fans and hot water showers. room 8 has a great sea view from an open-able large window, a 12' ceiling and is pure old world colonial. the hotel was built in the late '40's and shows its age but with style. there have been some updates but rooms are on the upper level and there is no elevator. staff are helpful and friendly, and there is a communal fridge, at that time there were many similar hotels on the georgetown waterfront. other than the very upmarket e&o, the paramount remains as one of the last of an era, and it too may soon be replaced by another characterless monster similar to those of batu ferringhi, or the tune. enjoy it while u can!

Nice clean colonial hotel”
Paramount Hotel was built during British times, we had been given large room (really spatious) with sea view. The building features colonial style, is located some 20 minute walk from City Centre (taxi some 17 MYR). Clean. Proximity of the sea shore does not mean sunbathing at the beach - it is smelly, but the wiew is nice. Some colonial exibits on second floor in the cupboard, including opium pipes...:)

Comfortable stay and value for money”
My family and i had a pleasant stay at the Paramount Hotel. We drove there, we checked-in late at about 11 pm, the restaurant was closed, so we had to get some food outside, the traffic there was quite confusing, we got lost and asked help from the locals. The local people were very friendly, it was difficult to describe the route back to the hotel, so the man personally guided us back to the hotel by following his motorbike.

Clean hotel with great service”
This hotel was a great find. It was a nice quiet place, with large rooms, friendly, helpful staff, good bathroom facilities, and the list goes on... The only downside to the hotel was it's distance from the city centre, however we had no troubles walking there and the catching a rickshaw back - so long as your bargaining skills are up to it. There was a reasonable food court nearby with a large array of foods. The attached restauraunt also provides a good meal. On the whole, this was a very pleasant stay and we would stay here again if returning to Penang.

good service”
stayed there for one night for penang marathon, location wise it is near gurney drive but bear in mind walking will take 45 minutes one way, good choice for those who own transport, for the price we pay for the room i can say it is worth staying, spacious room and toilet, lovely balcony facing the sea, ample parking. no tv set but we are not really concern.

good maintainened and clean ”
I planed to stay 1 night, but ended up 3 nights. Like the seaside location, the view ,the cleaness and the room size. Definitly a good deal for all travelers. Though it's a little far from the night life (about 1.5KM), about 10RM taxi to get to the Jalan Penang. It's a good experience to stay and get to know something about the histry of chinese people there in the area.

good enough”
Penang is so beautiful, staying at Paramount offers a way to make a tour on the island. The hotel has very big rooms, with all the necessary comfort. It's just a little bit too far walking to the city center.

That old colonial feel for a small penny”
Location is the Achilles' heel of Paramount, as it's neither in the heart of Georgetown or near a beach with swimming possibilities. However, we booked this place for the unique opportunity to bask in times gone past, high ceilings, original furniture - and loved it for one week! The room had AC, warm water, in-room wifi and *sigh* wall-to-wall carpets, which added some stuffiness. The garbage truck runs out back at around 11 PM, so bring your ear plugs. The second floor lobby has a hot/cold water dispenser (coffee sachets available only at breakfast) and a tiny fridge for guests' use. Our room was not cleaned or restocked during our entire 1-week stay, although we prefer it that way. The inclusive breakfast is not much; white toast, butter, marmalade and 3-in-1 coffee or tea. If you're fetching breakfast from the younger, courteous gentleman at the reception, you'll also get a small glass of juice. Else you're out of luck! The cleaning lady has a habit of stowing away the toaster at 10 o'clock... We usually bought some fresh food to supplement the breakfast with from Penang Plaza's well stocked supermarket 10-15 minutes away. There's a large food court/hawker center less than 15 minutes walking Southeast, called New World Park with dishes starting at RM 3,5 (Malaysian, Chinese, Western, Thai) plus some proper restaurants. To reach the fashion shops and restaurants of Gurney Plaza, expect a 35-minute walk. Read my travel tip for bus info. Like others have said, if you're seeking convenience, Paramount isn't for you. If you'd like to try on historic shoes and feel like the queen's colonial ambassador for a day, go for it!
